Brazil in Pictures
Synopsis

Brazil in Pictures is a documentary series of five episodes with 26 minutes each that aims to reveal the history and art of Brazilian photography through the works and trajectory of some of its most important photographers: D.Pedro II, Marc Ferrez, Valério Vieira, Mário de Andrade, Thomaz Farkas, Marcel Gautherot, Jean Manzon, Pierre Verger, e José Medeiros, entre outros. 

The series compiles the personal and artistic universe of the photographers searching the connection between the life and the works of those responsible for introducing, diffusing and modernizing photography in Brazil and who contributed to the development of a current of thought about the country and its issues, intensifying the role of photography itself as much more than just record keeping or artistic expression.

Director Lauro Escorel

Director Lauro Escorel: One of the most respected Brazilian directors of photography, Escorel was assistant of Did Lutfi and Affonso Beato before his debut as a director of photography in Sao Bernardo (1971), by Leon Hirzsman which was awarded for best photography in Gramado Festival. His work in Ironweed (1987), by Hector Babenco, shot in the USA, opened doors for the American market. While abroad, Escorel was responsible the direction of photography of Indecency (1992), by Marisa Silver, Dangerous Heart (1993), by Michael Scott and Amelia Earhart, The Final Flight (1994), by Yves Simoneau among other features. In Brazil, Escorel was photography director of movies such as All Nudity Shall Be Punished (1973), by Arnaldo Jabor, Bye Bye Brazil (1980), by Cacá Diegues, They Don't Wear Black-Tie (1981), by Leon Hirzsman, Coração Iluminado (1998), by Hector Babenco, Vinicius (2005), by Miguel Faria Jr., Batismo de Sangue (2006), by Helvécio Ratton and Chico, artista brasileiro (2015),by Miguel Faria Jr.

As a director, was responsible for the feature film Sonhos Sem Fim (1985), which was granted the special jury award  in Gramado Festival, and also documentary short films as Os Libertários (1979),  which won the Margarida de Prata award at CNBB, Improvável Encontro – Frente e Verso (2016), which premiered in Brasilia Festival and Elisa and Joana (2016) that he co-directed with Evaldo Mocarzel.


Escorel is member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences – AMPAS and he is one of the founders of Brazilian Society of Cinematographers - (ABC).
